The standard wait for a proof-of-citizenship certificate is now about 33 months — nearly three years. In a narrow set of documented situations, IRCC can process an application on an urgent basis — sometimes in a matter of weeks. Here is who may qualify, how it works, and what it can and cannot do.
Urgent processing is IRCC’s mechanism for moving a citizenship-certificate application ahead of the standard queue when there is a genuine, time-sensitive reason. It uses the same application and the same $75 government fee as an ordinary request; what changes is that you add a cover letter explaining the urgency and documents that prove it. IRCC reviews each request on its own facts and decides whether to grant it.
One point matters more than any other: urgent processing is about speed, not status. A reason to hurry says nothing about whether you are a citizen — and being a citizen says nothing about whether you will qualify to hurry. They are two separate questions.
IRCC publishes examples rather than a fixed list. The situations that come up most often are below. Yours does not have to match one exactly — what matters is a real deadline and documents that prove it.
A serious medical situation — your own or a close family member’s — where the certificate is needed to access care or to travel for it.
Employment, or a pending offer, that requires proof of Canadian citizenship in order to start or continue.
Attending a school, college, or university in Canada — one of IRCC’s listed grounds — where enrolment or fees turn on your status.
The death or serious illness of a family member requiring urgent, unavoidable travel.
You need a Canadian passport for imminent travel and must hold the certificate before you can apply for the passport.
A distinct category test: if you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country and can show air travel to Canada within six months, qualifying on that basis alone may be enough.
It changes the timeline, not the outcome. Your eligibility is assessed on the same evidence whether or not the request is expedited.
Even when a request is granted, IRCC cautions that the certificate still may not be issued within any set number of days.
IRCC will not process an application that is missing required documents. Urgency cannot substitute for a complete, correctly built package.
A request can be refused, and a vague or undocumented reason usually is. The evidence of urgency has to be real and on paper.
